The basic qualification for eligibility is &#8216;does this game have an entry in the <a href=\"http:\/\/ifdb.tads.org\/\">Interactive Fiction Database<\/a>&#8216;?<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In addition to an IFDB listing, a game needs to meet some minimal standards to be eligible for XYZZY voting:<\/p>\n<p><b>Available.\u00a0<\/b>The game must exist in a form that can be accessed by the general public, either commercially or for free. Most commonly, games that fail this standard were never available (the IFDB entry was a test, or an announcement of a forthcoming game that never showed up) or were only ever available in one place and have since disappeared, either because a website became defunct or because the author took it down.\u00a0But other possibilities exist: for instance, a game only available through private circulation, or only playable at special events with the author supervising, would not be eligible.<\/p>\n<p>The following works were excluded under these standards. Modern games are published in many different ways, so this is an increasingly indefinite\u00a0category; thus, we mostly rely on cues from the author. If an author describes the game with words like \u2018alpha\u2019, \u2018beta\u2019, \u2018demo\u2019, \u2018unfinished\u2019, \u2018intro\u2019, \u2018test\u2019, &#8216;early access,&#8217; \u2018under construction\u2019 or the like, or if it\u2019s an Introcomp release, we take the author\u2019s word for it.<\/p>\n<p>This doesn\u2019t apply to episodic works released as stand-alone installments.\u00a0<em>Earth and Sky<\/em>\u00a0was one story told in three games, but they all worked as complete, stand-alone games. Where it makes more sense, however, we&#8217;ll consider sequences of games as a single work (assuming that the sequence doesn&#8217;t include previously-released games).\u00a0<em>Feu du Joie<\/em> is being considered as a single, complete piece.\u00a0<em>18 Rooms to Home<\/em> is likewise being considered as a single piece, but an unfinished one, so it won&#8217;t be eligible this year.<\/p>\n<p>Ports, updated versions, and re-releases are considered to already have been released, and are not eligible. Adaptations, remixes and translations are considered to be new works. (Again, this is something of a rule of thumb. Jim Aikin\u2019s 2006 game\u00a0<em>Last Resort,<\/em>\u00a0considerably expanded and renamed\u00a0<em>Lydia\u2019s Heart<\/em>, was deemed eligible for the 2007 Awards.)<\/p>\n<p>For works which form expansions or supplements to existing works, things get a little more subjective. The main standards we apply here are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How\u00a0<em>distinct<\/em> is it from the broader work? Can it be played separately? Does it form a distinct narrative?<\/li>\n<li>How is it represented by the author or publisher? If you call an update 1.0.4.7ii(a), we&#8217;ll take your word for it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Although <em>Aspel<\/em> is a part of the\u00a0<em>Seltani<\/em> platform, it is clearly a distinct piece under these standards.\u00a0The various &#8216;Exceptional Stories&#8217; expansions for\u00a0<em>Fallen London<\/em>\u00a0are a little more ambiguous; it&#8217;s not clear whether to consider them as distinct works in an ongoing series, or as updates to a pre-published piece. In general, where a question is tricky, we&#8217;d rather err on the side of inclusion, so this year the Exceptional Stories are in. The XYZZYs don&#8217;t use the very broadest definition of IF &#8211; &#8216;any narrative game&#8217;\u00a0&#8211; but we keep an eye on the evolving standards of IF communities. At present, we judge that the working consensus definition of IF is something close to &#8216;a text game&#8217; &#8211; one in which interaction with prose or poetic text forms the heart of the experience, with graphics and illustration, audio, icons, spreadsheets and so on only appearing in a supplementary role.<\/p>\n<p>Only one game was excluded on these grounds: Failbetter&#8217;s\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/ifdb.tads.org\/viewgame?id=4a8gei7egnz7tsaw\">Sunless Sea<\/a><\/strong>. Sunless Sea has a strong focus on text and narrative, and features a high standard of writing, which qualify it as &#8216;interactive fiction&#8217; under some usages of the term. But it is also heavily reliant on real-time, graphical gameplay. The real-time graphical map exploration of\u00a0<em>Sunless Sea<\/em> is not a mere illustration supplementing or clarifying the text; it is the heart of the game. The central experience of\u00a0<em>Sunless Sea<\/em> is not interacting with text.<\/p>\n<p>Including\u00a0<em>Sunless Sea<\/em> would mean that\u00a0a great number of other graphical games &#8211; CRPGs, roguelikelikes &#8211; could only be excluded from XYZZY eligibility on quantitative grounds &#8211; &#8216;this isn&#8217;t literary enough to be IF&#8217; &#8211; which is not something we&#8217;re willing or able to police.<\/p>\n<p>The full list of eligible games follows.<\/p>\n<p>36 Questions (Dietrich Squinkifer (Squinky))<br \/>\nThe 4 Edith (Roboman)<br \/>\n5 Minutes to Burn Something!
